Ch. 4 Carbon and the Molecular Diversity of Life

Assignments

Assignment:  Where do your beliefs fall along the vitalism-determinism spectrum ?  Write you answer in one paragraph of three sentences, and print your name on the paper.  Do not turn the paper in; keep it with you to read to your classmates.

Assignment: Using information learned in Ch. 2, speculate on why D-Dopa is biologically inactive.  Write you answer in one paragraph of three sentences, and print your name on the paper.  Do not turn the paper in; keep it with you to read to your classmates.

Assignment: Draw each of the molecules shown in table 4.1, and place a square around  the functional group.  Label each drawing with the name of the functional group, the name of the compound (the type of molecule it is) and the name of the molecule itself. Turn this paper in, and keep a copy for your reference.  If you want a blank copy of this table, click here

Special Assignment
not contained in Ch. 4 Web pages

Assignment: Based on what you have learned about hydrogen bonds, speculate on how they might influence the shape of large organic molecules that contain many polar covalent bonds in their carbon backbone.  For a hint: consult Ch. 5, Figures 5.17 and 5.20.  Do not turn the paper in; keep it with you to read to your classmates.
